PHARMACIST CONTINUING EDUCATION (CE) REPORTING REQUIREMENTS
Effective September 16,2018, rule 4729:1-5-02of the Ohio Administrative Code updates the required minimum continuing education units (CEUs) pharmacists are required to obtain and aligns the reporting period to the biennial renewal cycle.
Specifically Pharmacists are required to obtain a minimum of 4.0 CEUs (40 hours) every two years prior to license renewal. Every pharmacist, no matter of license number, will be on the same reporting cycle beginning with the 2019 renewal. Please refer to the chart below for hours required to earn and report for the 2019 reporting period.
The following provides a quick over view of the Board’s continuing education requirements:
▪Any format (live, home study) is acceptable
▪Minimum 40 hours (4 CEUs) total, which must include:
•Minimum 2 hours medication errors/patient safety (ACPE-05)
•Minimum 2 hours jurisprudence or law (ACPE-03) or Ohio Board of Pharmacy Approved Jurisprudence
Effective September 16, 2018, new rules(4729-6) will go into effect that make changes to in-state providers of continuing education. These changes include:
- In -state providers will only be allowed to grant CPE credit for pharmacy jurisprudence courses or the provision of volunteer healthcare services.
-All jurisprudence programs from in - state providers must be approved by the Board of Pharmacy prior to the presentation of the program.
-Limits to the type of courses that may be presented for CE credit.

We will meet on Tuesday October 9th, 2018
Monthly meeting to be held at the:
German-American Cultural Center
7370 Columbia Rd.
Olmsted Twp. OH 44138
Dinner served at 6:45pm
Continuing Education begins at 7pm
CE awarded upon completion: 1 hour.
This CE is the most recent from the State Board website. It covers rules and regulations from 2017 covered in the 2017 quarterly newsletters. Copies of the 4 newsletters will be available for you to follow as we go through them as a group. A copy of the exam will be given to each participant to answer the questions as we go along. Simply submit your answers on-line on the State Board Law CE webpage when you get home.
The contract for the Pharmacist Letter does not begin until November 1st of this year. From that date on, all CE will be based on review of the Pharmacist Letter. Each member of WestShore will be eligible for a license to access the Pharmacist Letter as a benefit of being a member of WSPA. Get Pharmacist Letter at work? Then print out a copy and bring it along. This saves WSPA the cost of extra licenses.
Normal yearly individual membership to Pharmacist Letter is $139. Starting January 1st, 2019 WSPA will be offering the venue, 9 dinners and a yearly on-line subscription to Pharmacist Letter for only $100 per year. We will review the letter, CE topic and test questions at each meeting. All you have to do is go on-line when you get home and answer the questions for ACPE approved CE.
As mentioned at our last meeting, the board of WSPA has adopted this system in leu of changes the Ohio State Board of Pharmacy has made requiring all non-law CE be ACPE approved. As discussed at the September 2018 meeting, WSPA would have an extremely difficult time meeting these requirements , as would any local pharmacist association in the state of Ohio. The WSPA board unanimously believes that using Pharmacist Letter as our CE source will allow us to continue as an independent not-for-profit educational professional association.
I know this is a late notice but please RSVP as soon as possible to:
